Energy giant Shell and China-owned CPECC did not make it to the Government’s shortlist to enter into a long-term gas supply agreement.

But the only bidder with Maltese involvement, Electro Gas Malta Consortium, has been selected among five others to move on to the next stage of the competitive process.

The other companies are: Daewoo Shipping and Marine Engineering Company Ltd, Edison SPA, Endeavour Energy Holdings LLC and Exoduc Crossing LLC, Soffimat Gestamp, and Yildirim Tecnicas Power and Gas.

Initially, there were 19 submissions, which were first longlisted to 11.

The final six shortlisted will now submit a final bid.

The project is on track, the Energy Ministry said, adding that this was another step closer to cheaper bills and cleaner air.

The Government has promised to cut bills by 25 per cent from March next year through the building of a private gas-fired power station, which would sell electricity to Enemalta for onward distribution.
