• Amicable settlement through mediation by the Office for Consumer Affairs or by a registered consumer association must be resorted to before making a claim through the Consumer Claims Tribunal.
• The fee to be paid to file a claim varies according to the value being claimed.
• The limit of compensation that can be claimed through the tribunal is €3,500.
• The arbiter may also award to consumers up to €500 as compensation for moral damages.
• The parties involved in the claim do not need a lawyer to represent them during the hearing, but may opt to do so.
• Appeals may be filed within 20 days from the date of the arbiter’s decision.
• If a tribunal’s decision is not respected, the winning party may enforce it just like a court judgment.
