I refer to the article entitled Net Anchored To Rocks At Ghar Lapsi To Avert Danger From Falling Rocks (July 31). The solution offered by the Ministry for Infrastructure to rock instability at Għar Lapsi is remarkably short-sighted and ignores the geological processes affecting the area, namely strong sea waves.

The real test for the anchored rock nets will be during winter storms when three-metre high waves carrying boulders will come crashing into the rock net. It is unlikely that the rock net anchored to friable rock will survive such onslaught over many years. Moreover, the net is mostly anchored to the area exposed to sea erosion, which can lead to massive failure of the net. A differently designed rock net could have been used.

It seems that the Minister for Infrastructure’s incessant efforts to save money (this time on expert geological assessment) may have backfired and the €150,000 spent on this project may not offer a safe and lasting solution that we all hoped for in the Għar Lapsi bathing area.
