A committee has been set up by the Labour Party to organise the construction of a bronze statue in honour of former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff.

Addressing a press conference to unveil a programme of events to mark the first anniversary of Mr Mintoff’s death later this month, deputy party leader Toni Abela said the statue will be chosen from a number of designs.

They will be shown at an exhibition to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at the Labour Party headquarters in Ħamrun.

The exhibition, to be opened on August 20, the anniversary of the former Prime Minister’s death, will also include paintings and sculptures of Mr Mintoff.

Dr Abela said the exhibition was one of a series of events being held to commemorate Mr Mintoff. He said that a site for the monument had already been chosen and it was expected to be inaugurated on March 31 next year, the 35th anniversary of Freedom Day.

Asked by The Sunday Times of Malta where the statue is to be located, Dr Abela said: “Mr Mintoff was from the south. We will try to place it as close as possible to his birthplace.”
