Anyone but particularly Catholics who had any doubt that the Catholic religion is a joyful one must have had a change of heart following Pope Francis’s recent message to youths and to every audience he addressed shortly after he was elected Pope.

Upon his arrival in Rio the Pope said: “These young people are from every continent, they speak many languages, they bring with them different cultures and yet they also find in Christ the answer to their highest aspirations, held in common, and they can satisfy the hunger for a pure truth and authentic love which binds them together in spite of differences.”

These young people testified to the love of Jesus and the truth that there can be no better news than the ‘good news’ of his Gospel still relevant today. His teachings are advantageous to the whole world. Recently this was confirmed – even if subconsciously – by two PN stalwarts, Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici and Edwin Vassallo when referring to their latest publications.

Vassallo stressed his conviction that the Christian values he believes in when integrated with politics are beneficial to humanity. Is it worth tampering with these basic values to gain superficial support?

Mifsud Bonnici reminded us that the PN is not essentially inspired by liberalism or conservatism but by Christian Democracy with a focus on a vibrant economy ensuring the dignity of work and social justice, and therefore the PN is a progressive party.

Christian Democracy synthesises the ideals of Christianity and democracy. This political ideology does not attract a superficial support. If the rate of success of the spread of the good news of Christian values is measured by the way Pope Francis is managing to capture the hearts of people then the role of politicians like Vassallo and Mifsud Bonnici may well be a truly substantial role within the PN for a better society.
