A steel net has been put up along the low cliffs overlooking Għar Lapsi to protect swimmers from falling rocks.

The crumbling coastline on the outskirts of Siġġiewi has in recent years become an increasing danger to bathers.

In 2011 a large section of the cliff crashed down into a popular swimming area and, with the former Resources Ministry, the Siġġiewi council brought in technical experts to find a solution.

The court had ordered that two areas be closed off to the public – one next to the Għar Lapsi caves and another close by.

A netted fence was erected in both areas pending the conclusion of a technical survey. Warning signs were also installed, to keep people away, but these were largely ignored.

Siġġiewi Mayor Karol Aquilina said the local council was monitoring the area with the help of the police.

Yesterday Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi reported on progress done to protect the “most dangerous area” around the Għar Lapsi caves.

A stainless steel net has now been installed along the cliff contours to contain the crumbling rock.

Visiting the site in the morning, minutes after a sign was put up, Mr Mizzi said he had insisted the project should be completed within two months.

The current Administration built on the existing studies but made sure the project was implemented, Mr Mizzi said. He said the net can be removed or altered and the site will be monitored.

In the meantime, the Government is evaluating the risks and potential solutions for the rest of the area.

The 900-metre-square stainless steel net is being held up by 200 bolts anchored two metres into the cliffs, geotechnical engineer Adrian Mifsud explained.

It is already doing its job and has caught some rocks, averting possible injury.
