The Water Services Corporation will be investigating the foul smell of sewage in Pietà Creek, according to the health authorities.

The pong around the creek in Sa Maison, plagued with foul smells and leaks over the past months, led to a number of residents complaining to the Times of Malta.

A spokesman for the Environmental Health unit said a site inspection was carried out this week where “no sewage overflow or spillages were noted in the area or in the sea”.

However, “an intermittent faint foul smell of sewage was noted in front of a commercial outlet in the area,” the spokesman said. The Waste Water Unit of the Water Services Corporation was contacted and informed about these smells and their personnel would investigate the main sewer, he added.

No complaints, however, about sewage overflow or foul odours were received by the Health Inspectorate, with the last reports received in February.

Earlier this year, a number of residents turned to Times of Malta for help, complaining of an unbearable rancid stench, coupled with a dense, milky white patch that was seen spreading into the sea.

Although never identified by the health authorities, Malta Dairy Products had confirmed one of its pipes had been damaged and was repaired.

However, sewage kept seeping out, and the complaints persisted. Eventually, all sources contributing to the leak were identified and closed off.
