Mo Farah is to turn his focus to marathon running after next month’s World Championships although he will not walk away from the track entirely.

Earlier yesterday, the double London 2012 champion appeared to suggest his track career could be coming to a close as he looks to prove himself on the road.

Farah told Sky Sports News: “For me, this will be it. No more on the track. I’ll be doing the Great North Run half-marathon (in September) and then I’ll take a break, hopefully somewhere nice, and then get ready for the marathon.”

However, his agent Ricky Simms yesterday confirmed to Press Association Sport that the 30-year-old had been referring only to the 2013 season, and while he will turn his attention primarily to the marathon, he will continue to compete in track events in the future.

Farah will go for gold in both the 5,000 metre and 10,000m races in Moscow in a fortnight’s time, and demonstrated his form with a comfortable win over 3,000m at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in London today.

In his interview with Sky Sports News, Farah had suggested form would determine his future.

“We’ll see, it depends,” he said when asked if he could rule out competing on the track in 2016.

“If I’m good at the marathon and it works well, you could see me in the marathon (in Rio). If it doesn’t work out, you could see me back on the track.”

On Saturday, Farah won easily when he hit the front with around 500m to go and came home in seven minutes 36.85 seconds.

David Moorcroft’s 31-year-old British record of 7mins 32.79secs was never on the cards – Farah said it would have taken too much out of him – but the bumper crowd which roared Farah on could not have cared less.

American Ryan Hill finished second, more than five seconds behind the Briton.
