Q: About two months ago we ordered a sofa that was being sold at a reduced price. Its original price was €900 and we bought it for €450.

We paid a 25 per cent deposit and agreed with the seller to have the sofa delivered in three months’ time.

In the meantime, the company from where we bought the sofa offered further reductions and the model of the sofa we ordered is now selling at €200.

Since we have not yet received the sofa, can the company offer further reductions? If yes, can we get the sofa at its current sale price?

A: Legally there is nothing that prohibits the company from making further reductions, even though the sofa you ordered has not yet been delivered.

Once you placed the order and paid the deposit, the sale is concluded and the price agreed upon cannot be changed.

Having said that, you may still try and speak to the seller and ask for a further discount.

However, the seller is not legally obliged to reduce the price you agreed upon when placing the order of the sofa.
