The Government condemned the shocking assassination of Mohamed Brahmi, a member of the Opposition in Tunisia.

This act, on the 56th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Tunisia, strongly contradicted the spirit of such an important date, the government said.

It extended its condolences to the family and friends of MrBrahmi as well as to the members of the “Movement of the People Party”, which he founded to bring about a new Tunisia after the revolution of January 14, 2011.

The killing of prominent politicians, including that of Choukri Belaid on February 6, undermined the democratic process which Tunisia had initiated through the courageous efforts of its people more than two years ago.

"All components of Tunisian society must remain steadfast in the face of such acts, and continue building democratic governance based on tolerance and mutual respect for the different factions of Tunisia.

"In view of the declarations made by President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki, the President of the Constituent Assembly, Mustapha Ben Jafar, and the leader of the Ennahda Islamist Party, Rachid Ghannouchi, Malta remains confident that the transition process of the Republic of Tunisia will not be derailed in the face of such attempts," the government said.
