The number of people registering as unemployed in June stood at 7,279, up from 6,697 in the same month last year, but marginally lower than in May, according to data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation.

The NSO said the data indicated a year-on-year growth of 848 people registering under Part 1 and a decrease of 266 persons registering under Part 2 of the unemployment register.

Those registering under Part 1 are new job seekers who have left school, re-entrants into the labour market, and job losers who have been made redundant by their former employers.

Those registering under Part 2 are workers who have been dismissed from work due to disciplinary action, left work of their own free will, refused work or training opportunities or were struck off the register after an inspection by law enforcement personnel.

On a regional level, registered unemployment in Malta and Gozo rose by 502 (8.3 per cent) and 80 (11.9 per cent), respectively when compared to last year.

Registered unemployed persons aged 45 and over went up by 244, or 8.7 per cent. Those below 20 declined by 30, or 13.3 per cent, when compared to 2012 levels.

A year-on-year increase of 578 persons was recorded in registrants whose duration of unemployment exceeded one year. On the other hand, unemployed persons who had been on the register for less than 21 weeks decreased by 131, or 4.6 per cent.
