The Labour Party has opened nominations from prospective candidates for the European Parliament elections scheduled for May 2014.

Candidates will be approved once a commission makes its recommendations to the party’s administration and national executive.

The party encouraged people who wanted to be of service to the country to get in contact.

Malta has six seats in the European Parliament, four of which are currently occupied by the PL and two by the Nationalist Party.

Next year’s MEP election will be the first with the Nationalists in opposition.

In April, Times of Malta reported MPs Joe Sammut and Marlene Farrugia were expected to be among Labour’s candidates.

Other probable candidates include Labour’s former leader Alfred Sant, ex-Sliema councillor Cyrus Engerer, Marlene Mizzi, and lawyer Ramona Frendo, who featured in Labour’s bill-board campaign.
