Former Nationalist parliamentary secretary for defence Tony Abela yesterday submitted his nomination to fill in the seat vacated by ex-Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

Dr Gonzi resigned last week after serving the Maltese parliament for 25 years.

So far, only Dr Abela, a notary by profession, has put himself forward.

Nominations close on Friday and a casual election will be held on July 30.
