Snooker: Ali Carter will return to tournament snooker at the Shanghai Masters after being given the all-clear from testicular cancer. The 33-year-old under-went an operation shortly after making his cancer diagnosis public on July 1 and he later sought a follow-up examination from his oncologist. But yester-day the two-time world finalist wrote on his Twitter account: “Just had the best news ever! I’ve got the all clear! Will be back in action in the Shanghai Masters. Thank you everyone for all your support!” His decision to return for September’s world ranking event in Shanghai gives Carter another two months to recu-perate from his illness.

Rugby League: Hull’s Australian forward Ben Galea has announced his retirement with immediate effect. The 34-year-old second rower had planned to hang up his boots at the end of the season, the 15th of his career, but a torn pectoral muscle sustained in Hull’s Challenge Cup quarter-final win over Catalan Dragons in Perpignan last weekend has prompted him to bring forward his retirement. Galea made 15 appearances for the Black and Whites after joining them from city rivals Hull KR at the end of last season. He had five seasons at Craven Park and is also a former NRL winner from his three-year spell in Sydney with Wests Tigers.

Taekwondo: Great Britain’s Lutalo Muhammad could not produce a repeat of his medal-winning Olympic performance as he bowed out at the last-16 stage of the World Championships in Mexico. Muhammad was con-troversially selected ahead of Aaron Cook in the 80kg category for last summer’s Olympics and went on to claim bronze, but had less success in Puebla back competing at 87kg.

Golf: Lee Westwood will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the British Open after a rollercoaster third day at Muirfield. That means Tiger Woods will have to make history to win his 15th major title and deny the Englishman a first at the 62nd attempt after failing to keep pace with his playing partner. Westwood carded an eagle and three birdies in a round of 70 that left him atop the leaderboard on three under par, with Woods (72) and fellow American Hunter Mahan (68) the only other players in red figures on one under.

Basket, NBA: Cleveland announced that they signed centre Andrew Bynum. The Cavaliers did not release the terms of the deal, but reports have indicated that the deal is for two years and worth $24m. Bynum, 25, did not play for the Philadelphia 76ers last season because of problems with his knees that required surgery.
