After the Euro Championship second qualifying round matches, which were completed last Sunday in three different countries including Malta, the points total obtained by each nation shows our national team in the ninth position in the table. The list comprised the 17 teams in all the three qualification groups.

Only the top six nations in the standings will proceed to the third phase in November which means that Malta has missed out on the next round.

In the wake of Malta’s 11-10 defeat against Belarus in the opening Group D match on Thursday, followed two days later by another narrow 10-8 defeat at the hands of Ukraine, Karl Izzo’s men lost the chance to make it to the top six and eventually to the subsequent phase.

Malta totalled an aggregate of 13 points. The next highest placing with 15 points was obtained by Portugal, whom Malta beat 16-8 in the first phase in April.

The top six teams from the two qualifying rounds will now meet Spain, Romania, Croatia, Netherlands, Macedonia and Turkey between November 7 and 10, with the draws for the play-offs on a knock-out basis still to be made.

The six winners from phase three will proceed to the finals in Budapest between July 13 and 26, 2014 when they will come up against Serbia, Montenegro, Hungary, Italy, Germany and Greece.
