On June 22 I uploaded a blog titled: ‘The politics of principle’. I revisit it today just before (Wednesday 17) Dr Lawrence Gonzi will sing his swan song in Parliament.

Following Dr Gonzi’s speech in Parliament, Prime Minister Muscat and Leader of the Opposition Busuttil will sing his praises. There is no doubt that both will say positive things about Dr Gonzi. I am sure that these will not be said just because it is customary to talk nicely about people who retire. Both Drs Muscat and Busuttil will say what they really think of the man and they will have no problem to choose their pick from the very positive achievement made by Dr Gonzi during his distinguished political career.

I will not make any eulogies. I will just repeat the first sentence of the piece I wrote on June 22 and to which I have just referred:

“In an era whose politics are dominated by a culture of cynicism and convenience it is good to commemorate a man for whom principles were more important that short term gains.”

There is no need to write more.
