Peter Fenech is to file two libel suits against Maltatoday and the newspaper’s website, maltatoday.com.mt, over two articles published yesterday entitled ‘Peter Fenech in impossible attempt at MFA presidency’ and ‘Dede’s supporters play down MFA rival’s transparency credentials’.

Dr Fenech, who is standing against current incumbent Norman Darmanin Demajo in Saturday’s election for MFA president, feels defamed by the reports whereby it is claimed that he had failed to probe allegations of irregularities in the Malta FA’s distribution of UEFA’s solidarity payments when he chaired the association’s Board of Inquiry between 2007 and 2010.

In a statement, Dr Fenech, who was also MFA vice-president when the allegations were flagged by Darmanin Demajo, reiterated that he never received a letter to investigate any allegation he wished to raise.

He added that the MFA Council had agreed that the matter be dealt with in court as Joe Mifsud, the then Malta FA president, was suing for libel.

Furthermore, Dr Fenech claimed that the “Board of Inquiry does not have the authority to investigate every complaint it receives since in terms of article 68(1) of the MFA Statute, the Board can only initiate an inquiry if so directed by the president, or by the Executive or Council of the MFA”.
