Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is making it clear the Government does not approve of any demonstrations supporting its stand on irregular immigration.

Speaking to journalists yesterday, he said there was no need for any such demonstrations and the Government did not support such action.

The Government’s decision earlier this week to consider all options on how to deal with the latest influx of irregular immigrants – including returning them to Libya without first giving them the chance to apply for asylum – spurred a group of Facebook users to organise a demonstration in Valletta today to support the stand.

Another demonstration in favour of the Government’s stand against “illegal immigration” is planned for tomorrow morning.

On Tuesday, following the arrival of about 100 irregular migrants from Libya, the Government made plans to repatriate them using chartered Air Malta flights.

However, the European Court of Human Rights issued an interim order stopping the deportation following a case filed by the Jesuit Refugee Service in Strasbourg.

The European Commission had also warned Dr Muscat to desist from his push-back plan and warned that such action would be illegal.
