Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning expressed his wish to see more foreign students in Malta and said the government viewed education as a growth sector of the Maltese economy.

Speaking during a visit to St Martin’s Highest Education institute in Hamrun, Dr Muscat said that apart from China and Asia, the government wanted education institutions to try to attract more students from the North African region.

“We see good potential for the development of post secondary and tertiary education institutions for Malta. The government sees a huge economic potential in this area.”

Dr Muscat said that the government was currently working on a new regulatory framework in this area as it was adamant to safeguard the good reputation Malta achieved in this sector in the past years.

College owner Charles Theuma said his institute was aiming at growth, with a target of reaching the 1,000 student before the end of the decade.

The institute offers an array of courses accredited by the University of London.
