The government has issued an international call for expressions of interest for land reclamation in Malta.

The call is very open, with any area being considered as long as the project is economically and socially viable and does not harm the environment, Parliamentary Secretary Michael Farrugia said.

He said this would be a  private sector project.

"The government is not aiming for real estate development but a mix of projects," Dr Farrugia said without going into specifics.

There is no commitment regarding the size of the proposed reclamation.

Dr Farrugia said that technology had evolved and what was not viable a few years ago might now be viable. However, he conceded, the project may not go ahead if viability is not proven.

Applications have to be collected by September 6 and submissions have to be made by the end of November. Applicants will be handed a CD pointing out ecologically sensitive areas and other limitations.
