The Malta U-17 lost their final match at the Mediterranean Cup in Rome yesterday when they lost to Georgia 15-11.

Anthony Farrugia’s boys came into the match in high spirits after Saturday’s 11-5 victory over Cyprus.

However, the Georgians were faster out of the blocks and surged into a 3-1 lead at the end of the first session.

The second session was evenly balanced with both sides hitting the net four times as Georgia preserved their two-goal advantage to change ends 7-5 ahead.

Georgia stepped up a gear in the third session when they netted five times against Malta’s two goals to open a comfortable 12-7 lead with only one quarter remaining.

The Maltese tried to recover in the final quarter but Georgia easily administered their advantage despite losing the session 4-3.

Camillo Matteo Camici was Malta’s leading scorer with six goals.
