Some 180 cats being kept on the roof of the former labour headquarters are still awaiting relocation.

The strays are housed on the Maċina roof in Senglea but the Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines were forced to seek a new site or face putting the cats down after planning permission for restoration works on the Maċina site were approved last May.

The carers have been allowed to continue housing the cats at the Maċina site on a temporary basis after Animal Rights Parliamentary Secretary Roderick Galdes committed himself to finding a suitable location for the animals.

A new location has yet to be found but the carers are optimistic that a solution will be found soon.

Mr Galdes has just opened a new cat sanctuary in Għammieri. About 150 cats were relocated to the Għammieri government farm, which provides ample space and state-of-the-art shelter facilities.
