The Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) received a record 661 student applications for the 307 slots available through its summer work placement programme.

In all, 61 private sector employers and 21 public sector entities confirmed their willingness to host summer students.

Of the applicants, 588 met the minimum eligibility criteria, the majority of whom are studying for their vocational ICT diploma.

The students do not typically replace full-time personnel, but shadow the employers’ professionals and contribute knowledge and assistance. Employers also have the opportunity to target their potential future recruits and influence the student’s future choices in terms of studies and specialisations.

Students will start their attachment as early in July as possible, with the placement running until the end of September. The remuneration rate for students is that of €5.51 per hour, for a working week of 30 hours.
