Six long-distance runners will represent the country at the European Mountain Championships, to be held in Borovets, Bulgaria this weekend.

The men’s team will be formed of Andrew Grech, Joseph Saliba and Charles Cilia, while Giselle Camilleri, Angela Sammut and Carmen Hili will compete in the women’s category.

The men’s race will be held on an 11.5km circuit covering 1,130 metres of uneven terrain. The women’s runners will be engaged in an 8.8km race.

Grech booked his place for Bulgaria after winning a Malta Mountain Running Champion-ship race held last month. Saliba and Cilia were second and third respectively at that same race, staged in the limits of Mġarr and Rabat.

Sammut was selected after winning the women’s race ahead of Hili. Giselle Camilleri did not compete in the championship but has just won a 14km uphill event in France.

For Camilleri, the champion-ships come at the end of a few hectic weeks of competition.

Camilleri won two bronze medals at the Luxembourg GSSE last month and she was also part of the Athletics Malta selection in the Euro Team Champion-ships in Slovakia.
