An Offshore LNG regassification terminal, the FSRU Toscana was towed into Grand Harbour and the Palumbo dockyard this afternoon.

The huge vessel (115156 gross tons) towered over the bastions as it was pulled in by tug boats.

The FSRU Toscana was launched in February at the Drydocks World shipyard in Dubai and is on its way to Livorno where will be permanently moored and used as as a terminal and export point.

The vessel is similar to LNG storage and regassification ship proposed to supply the new gas power station at Delimara.

Rigzone, a specialist website said the Toscana is the former 455,479-cubic feet (cbf) LNG carrier Golar Frost. It had been under conversion since June 2009 for contractor Saipem and owner OLT.

The unit has a net storage capacity of 449,803 cubic feet and it is classed as a marine unit designed to remain at the site for 20 years. The FSRU has a steel mono-hull with four Moss-type LNG tanks, the Re-gasification Plant is located at the forward end and the accommodation with central control room and utility machinery is at the aft end.

OLT Offshore LNG Toscana awarded Saipem the FSRU contract, worth $597 million in March 2008. The FSRU is the first offshore-moored floating regasification plant in the world, according to Saipem.
