Maltese shooter William Chetcuti has won a gold medal in the double trap event at the Mediterranean Games.

The Games are being held in Mersin in Turkey.

It is Malta's first ever gold in these games.

Chetcuti managed 29/30 in his first round and 26/30 in his second , 28/30 in his third 29/30 in his fourth round and 27/30 to qualify for the semi-finals with 139/150.

He managed 28/30 to qualify for the medal match which he won, beating an Italian competitor.

Nathan Lee Xuereb managed 123/150 and failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

The Malta Shooting Sport Federation congratulated Chetcuti and all those involved in his success including The Malta Olympic Committee, the Sports Council and The Armed Forces of Malta.

The Prime Minister said Chetcuti had made Malta proud. The PN also congratulated Chetcuti.
