Five divers were plucked from the sea by an AFM helicopter yesterday after finding themselves in difficulty while swimming in rough sea off Ghar Lapsi.

The divers were trapped under the cliffs close to a cave and could not make it to land. The AFM dispatched the Search and Rescue launch Melita I and an Alouette III helicopter to the area.

The helicopter crew winched the five divers to a safe area in the vicinity.

MEDICAL EVACUATION

Later on during the day an AFM helicopter also ferried a crew member from the cargo ship MV Toledo after he suffered severe chest pains. The ship was 38 nautical miles off Gozo. The operation was made difficult by a strong wind.

The crew member was landed at the Air Wing base and taken to hospital.
