The first charging point for electric cars was unveiled in Floriana this afternoon and Malta and Gozo will have about 100 of them by year's end, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said this afternoon.

The €1.9m project costs are being shared between the EU and national funds. The project was announced in 2011.

Mr Mizzi explained how today's unveiling was part of the Demo EV project to demonstrate the feasibility of electric vehicles.

The minister also unveiled 12 electric cars which will be used by volunteers for comparative studies over a number of months. Another 12 cars - Renault and Mitsubishi will be brought to Malta shortly.

The minister himself will be using a Renault Fleunce as his official car.

The first charging point, near the offices of the Transport and Education ministries in Floriana, will be available for free from next week.
