Prepare to douse yourself with cold water, don loose cotton shirts and drink lots of water as temperatures continue to sizzle in the coming days.

The sweltering heat wave is expected to persist, prompting the health authorities to warn people to stay safe and out of the sun.

Yesterday’s temperature soared to 35°C and is expected to persist until tomorrow, after which the mercury is expected to dip to 30°C. The Health Ministry emphasised the importance of keeping well hydrated.

High temperatures cause loss of body fluids at quick rates resulting in dehydration. It can also lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

The heat can affect anyone but some run a greater risk of serious harm, such as older people, babies and young children, people with chronic conditions and physically active people.

Unnecessary exposure to the sun should be avoided during hot periods of the day between 11am and 4pm.

People are advised to stay cool by staying in the coolest parts of their homes and place of work, drink regularly and eat more cold food.

Some tips to beat the heat without turning up the air conditioning:

Rub several drops of peppermint oil on the bottom of the feet, palms of hands and neck.

Hang a wet sheet in front of the window – the moisture cools the air passing through the damp cloth.

In the same vein, put a bowl of ice in front of a fan and let the cool air blow over you.

Arm yourself with a spray bottle filled with chilled water and douse yourself liberally.

Sit with your feet in a bucket of cold water.
