While in season 2011-12 Manchester City had claimed the Premier League title for the first time in their club history, last month Manchester United returned to their usual self and attained their 20th championship − a remarkable record.

United did it in great style and made sure of the top position with five matches still to play.

In the climax to the celebrations Alex Ferguson announced that this was his last season and David Moyes, Ferguson’s fellow Scot, was named as his replacement at Old Trafford.

At rivals City, Roberto Mancini’s failure to build on their first championship in 44 years, added to a badly-planned Champions League campaign that fell at the group stage, led to his eventual sacking.

Chilean Manuel Pellegrini, formerly of Malaga, has been appointed as the new coach at the Etihad Stadium.

At Old Trafford, Robin van Persie finished as the country’s main scorer with 26 goals in his first season in a United shirt following his move from Arsenal.

In the Champions League, City again failed to proceed from the group phase. United were knocked out in the last 16 stage. After a fine draw away at Real Madrid, the Red Devils lost the return at Old Trafford 1-2.

In the domestic cups, United fell to Chelsea in both domestic cup competitions – 0-1 (FA Cup quarter-final replay) and 4-5 (League Cup fourth round).

In the FA Cup final, City were shocked by underdogs Wigan 0-1 at Wembley. They made an early third-round exit in the League Cup, going down to Aston Villa 4-2.

Interesting feats for both City and United:

• Manchester City were the only side who scored in all 19 of their home games last season.

• The most prolific goalscorer in the Premier League in the 2012-13 campaign (of all players with 1,000+ minutes on the pitch) was Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez, with a goal every 103 minutes on average.

• Manchester United scored more equalisers (17) than any other team in the Premier League.

• The most efficient team in front of goal were Manchester United who needed an average of six shots to score each of their goals. United benefited from more own goals (6) than any other team.

• Manchester City used the most substitutes − 112 out of a possible 114.
