Cricket: Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting will retire from all cricket in October. The 38-year-old called time on his international career in December but has continued to feature in a variety of domestic competitions and is currently playing for Surrey. After the end of that deal he will compete in the Champions League with his Indian Premier League franchise the Mumbai Indians before retiring for good. Ponting said: “While I’m enjoying my cricket as much as ever, it just feels like the right time to finish playing.”

Cycling: Andy Schleck will lead RadioShack-Leopard on the Tour de France even though he has been struggling with his form for a year. Since he broke his pelvis in June 2012, Schleck has failed to finish most of the stage races he has entered, although he has shown improvement lately as he finished 40th overall in the Tour of Switzerland last Sunday.

Athletics: World and Olympic champion Sally Pearson will compete in her first 100 metres hurdles event since winning gold at last year’s London Games when she races in the Czech Republic next week. The 26-year-old will compete in Ostrava next Thursday before taking part in the hurdles at the IAAF Diamond League in Birmingham on June 30. Pearson suffered a grade-one hamstring tear at the Asian Grand Prix Championship in Sri Lanka last month.

Tennis: French Open champion Rafael Nadal will complete his warm-up for Wimbledon in the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic at The Hurlingham Club today. The two-time Wimbledon winner will meet Kei Nishikori of Japan. Nadal said: “I am happy to play the event at the Hurlingham Club, especially as I haven’t played on grass since the French Open.”
