A cow that managed to climb on to the roof of a garage before falling through was rescued by firefighters – after spending 24 hours in a car inspection pit.

The fire service was called late on Tuesday by a farmer who had discovered one of his valuable beef breeding cows stuck in the pit. It is not known how the young heifer scaled the roof of the garage on the edge of the farmer’s pasture in Devon.

Fire and Rescue officers spent two and a half hours heaving the cow out of the pit. A vet attended the scene and gave the 18-month-old animal a health check before it walked up the lane back to the pasture. (AP)

Good Samaritan kicked out

An 82-year-old good Samaritan who gave free haircuts to homeless people has been ordered out of a city park because residents were concerned about safety and cleanliness.

Health officials in Hartford, Connecticut, said they are trying to work with Anthony Cymerys so he can continue providing the service in a more controlled environment. They also say he is not a licensed barber.

He is known as “Joe the Barber” and has been giving haircuts in the city in exchange for hugs for 25 years. (PA)

Wanted: modern court jester

An Austrian hotel is advertising for a modern-day court jester, who is communicative, extroverted, musical, creative and imaginative.

Applicants are asked to bring and play their musical instrument during the job interview. Also welcome are creative costumes. The successful candidate will earn €1,400 a month.

Hotel director Melanie Franke said those interested should not think they are on a fool’s errand in applying. She said the idea is to treat guests like royalty, noting that “jesters were a luxury that royal families indulged themselves in”. (PA)
