Biggest field ever for the anniversary tournament

A team of four golfers from South Africa, New Zealand and Malta won the prestigious Emirates Cup held recently at the Royal Malta Golf Club (RMGC), as part its 125 years celebrations.

Paul Stoner, from Malta’s RMGC, Marilyn and Michael Brain, from the Royal Cape Golf Club (South Africa), and Andrew Meehan from the Royal Wellington Golf Club (New Zealand) em-erged as winners with 93 Stable-ford points.

More than 200 golfers participated in the tournament – the biggest field in a golf competition ever in Malta in one day.

Fifty-two teams of four golfers each competed in a Fourball Alliance Stableford game.

Emirates Malta Manager Paul Fleri Soler presented the winning team with an Emirates crystal trophy, specially brought over from Dubai for the occasion.

This will be permanently showcased at the RMGC.

Fleri Soler said: “Emirates has been connecting golfers and fans with many major international tournaments.

“By sponsoring the Emirates Cup celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Royal Malta Golf Club, we are connecting golfers in Malta with others from different Royal Golf Clubs around the world.

“From the response and enthusiasm seen at Marsa this has been achieved.”

RMGC captain David Debono said the partnership with Emirates drew its benefits.

“The tournament was a great success, with so many players representing Royal Golf Clubs from different countries,” he said.

“By partnering Emirates for this year’s special anniversary celebrations, we have been able to host one of the most prestigious tournaments ever at our club.”

Overseas golfers travelled to Malta from Scotland, England, Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, Wales, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Australia and Canada.
