A team of educational ICT professionals with a genuine passion for innovative ways of teaching and learning through technology are organising a Smart Summer Club. These professionals have been working with young students, student teachers and teachers for the past 10 years, during which they have accumulated extensive experience. The Smart Summer Club is a project in which they are putting into practice what they have been preaching for the past years.
Properly used, technology helps children acquire skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based society. Although Smart Summer Club is meant to be a recreational summer school based on a structured but informal set-up, where children have a break during the summer recess, the Smart Summer Club has the right ingredients to address the recreational and educational areas that are of utmost importance for helping children’s development.
The summer programme is varied and targets the physical and the cognitive aspects of children’s development.
Activities range from arts, crafts, music and sports to the programming of educational robots and the creation of digital animation.
During the robotics activities, children will learn how to instruct a little robot to perform tasks by giving simple instructions.
This will induce children to learn about technology in a playful and motivating way. Children will not only get acquainted with technology, but will also practise logical and structured thinking while training their reading, writing and numeracy skills in an exciting approach.
The Smart Summer Club provides an effective learning process which supports the four key components of learning: active engagement, collaboration, interaction and feedback, and the connection to the real world. All these key factors are integrated in an informal environment.
