Former Sliema deputy mayor Cyrus Engerer yesterday announced he will be contesting next May’s European Parliament elections on behalf of the Labour Party.

A gay rights’ activist, Mr Engerer was recently acquitted of circulating pornographic material of an ex-boyfriend and computer misuse even though the magistrate concluded that he had circulated the images.

He started out his political career within the Nationalist Party but switched to Labour after Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s decision to vote against the Divorce Bill in Parliament.
