At the next Malta Cafe Scientifique talk, David Magri from the University’s Faculty of Science, will give a presentation called Light up my Chemical Computer and conduct live experiments on Thursday at 7.30pm in the Music Room, St James Cavalier, Valletta.

Chemical computing is starting to dawn. Intelligent molecules are an up-and-coming field of science.

These molecules can perform simple calculations by combining the fields of maths, molecular engineering and computer science. They can answer built-in logic operations, such as whether a blood sample has both high sugar and insulin levels, which is very useful for people with diabetes. The chemicals indicate Yes by shining or No by remaining dark.

The chemicals are now advanced enough to be used in environmental sensing, cell biology, biotech and blood disease detection.

Malta Cafe Scientifique is supported by the Malta Chamber of Scientists (www.mcs.org.mt) and assisted by the University. Entrance is free.
