Cappella Sanctae Catharinae will be celebrating the summer equinox with a concert titled Lumen Christi.
Lumen Christi celebrates Christ as the light of the world through sacred polyphony from the 16th and 17th centuries. The programme includes canticles, psalms and hymns in praise of God. These include settings of the Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis and Te Deum.
The concert presents a veritable showcase of European polyphony. It ranges from the strict counterpoint of Palestrina to the homophonic settings of Weelkes. There are pieces which involve a mixture of plainchant and polyphony, while others call for antiphonal effects.
The concert will be held at St Augustine parish church, Valletta, a baroque gem that not only has one of the most beautiful interiors in the capital, but also boasts superb acoustics.
Lumen Christi will be held on June 21 at 8pm. Entrance is free, but donations towards the needs of the choir and the church will be appreciated.
