Team Malta came back from Luxembourg with 26 medals, including two gold. Other nations with a smaller population than Malta fared much better e.g. Iceland (pop. 319,000) 87 medals (including 28 gold), Liechtenstein (pop. 37,000) 35 medals (eight gold) and Monaco (pop. 31,000) 30 medals (seven gold).

In the review about the Games (June 3) it was said that the Malta Olympic Committee has work to do to boost performance. It was also stated that long-term planning is the only way forward for both the MOC and the local federations to build competitive teams.

Eureka! As if this was the first time that Team Malta was competing in the Small Nations Games.

What is the secret of the success of the smaller nations, including Andorra (pop. 86,000) and San Marino (pop. 32,000)? What is hampering Team Malta from achieving better results? Lack of funds, facilities or the lack of real commitment and professional know-how?
