Two men have been taken to court, accused of trying to bribe a football player.

Ronnie MacKay, a soldier from Marsa aged 31 and player Chris Brincat, 27 of Floriana, pleaded not guilty to having, on September 27 last, tried to bribe Nigerian Sunday Eboh. The attempt took place shortly before a Gzira vs Naxxar match.

The court was told that recordings of the alleged bribery attempt existed, having been made by Mr Eboh.

Police Inspector Malvyn Camilleri asked the court to authorise a voice comparison test to confirm that the voices on the tape were those of the accused.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Veronique Dalli objected. Dr Debono said that contrary to, say, fingerprints, such a test was not provided for by law and the accused had a right to remain silent even in this context.

The court will announce its decision in another sitting.
