When you hear a story of domestic violence what is your initial reaction?
I am surprised at how common it still is, despite the amount of awareness raised nowadays. Alessia Caruana, 19, Bachelor of Arts in History of Art and English.
I am horrified. I cannot believe these types of people still exist in the 21st century. Eric Fenech Sevasta, 20, Bachelor of Arts in History of Art (Hons).
Angry and sad. Such things shouldn’t happen. It’s something no human should endure. Vanessa Vassallo, 22, Bachelor of Arts in Tourism Studies (Hons).
With all the social protection around nowadays, why do you think so many women still do not stand up to such abuse?
There could be numerous reasons. Mainly, I think some women find it hard to stand up to their husbands for the sake of their family. Alessia Caruana
They feel powerless when confronted by violence and are afraid of fighting back. Eric Fenech Sevasta
I think most women tend to depend on their husbands for financial support and are afraid they might not be able to support themselves without their spouse. They might also be too scared to stand up to them. Vanessa Vassallo
Around 77 per cent of reports of violence are against women. Do you think abused men would be given help if they spoke up?
Yes, why not? It is abuse nonetheless so it should be given as much priority. Alessia Caruana
Most men would feel embarrassed and ashamed to speak out and say they have been abused. Unfortunately, the issue of masculinity is still very much implanted in the male mind. Eric Fenech Sevasta
Yes, but a sense of shame will probably take over. Vanessa Vassallo
