Health Commissioner Tonio Borg and Social Dialogue Minister Helena Dalli today
launched an information campaign on consumer credit in Valletta, Malta.

The campaign targets young adults aged between 18 and 35 to raise their awareness of their rights before they sign a credit agreement.

The slogan of the campaign is "Need credit? Don't just sign. You have rights".

These rights stem from the Consumer Credit Directive which came into force in June 2010.

The campaign will focus on the right to transparent advertising, the
right to receive standardised and comparable information before signing a contract, the right to clear information in the contract and the right to withdraw from an agreement within 14 days without explanation and the right to repay early.

The campaign will run for one year and will take place in Spain, Ireland and Cyprus.

Dr Dalli welcomed the campaign, which, she said, would help consumers understand their rights better and feel more confident when taking out credit.

Commissioner Borg said that raising awareness about the rights given by EU will enable consumers to make informed choices.
