So the cat is finally out of the European bag. We have been told that we are on our own when it comes to resettling the irregular immigrants who are arriving on our shores (May 23).
Surely the Government cannot remain complacent and docile in the face of this intransigence on the part of the EU? Our fragile economy just cannot cope with all these extra residents; how are we expected to reduce our deficit when faced with this burden?
It is also only a matter of time before militants land on our shores, with all the complications that would bring.
The Maltese are a fairly tolerant people but if left unchecked this situation will undoubtedly create problems on the same scale as it has done elsewhere in Europe.
We now expect concrete action not fine, politically correct, words from our politicians on this thorny matter. The position of the European Commission is totally unacceptable.
