The planning authority did not know where or when 25,000 tons of grit waste was dumped despite accusing a prominent businessman and a former director at the Land Department of illegal dumping, a court heard yesterday.

Cassar Ship Repair chairman Anthony Cassar and Albert Mamo are pleading not guilty to the illegal dumping of the waste in 2011.

Environmental Protection Officer, Anthony Aquilina, testified yesterday that the waste had gone missing from a site in Għajn Dwieli after Mr Cassar’s company had taken control of it.

Mr Cassar, however, had contested that the site had never contained such a large amount of grit and said it had been mixed with substrate and the area had been levelled off, Mr Aquilina said.

Cross-examined by lawyers Stefano Filletti and Pawlu Lia, Mr Aquilina confirmed that the Malta Environment and Planning Authority did not know where or when the grit waste had been dumped.

The case continues.
