San Ġiljan ASC have just confirmed the signing of two international heavyweights for the upcoming waterpolo season – Peter Biros (Hungary) and Marko Avramovic (Serbia).

Both players are new to the local scene.

Biros is a triple Olympic gold medallist (Sydney, Athens and Beijing). Recently, he retired from the national team after acting as captain and flag-bearer for his country at the London Olympics.

Biros is currently playing for Eger in Hungary and has just won the national league play-off finals.

This season, Avramovic helped Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade to the national title.

With the Serbian national team, he won a gold medal at the 2009 Rome World Championships and a silver medal in the 2011 tournament which was played in Shanghai.

San Ġiljan coach Karl Izzo, also the national team mentor, has been confirmed for a third consecutive year, the Balluta Bay outfit said in a statement.

The club has acquired the services of Claudio Spiteri de Barro and goalkeeper Joseph Sammut who both played for Sirens last year.

San Ġiljan ASC, who also intend to revive the women’s waterpolo game this summer, will also have a new main sponsor for the season, Sir Alex. They have been entrusted with the management of the catering services at the club.

The San Ġiljan youth team, following their U-17 championship success last year, have also been strengthened with the recent signature of coach Svilen Piralkov from Spain’s CN Sabadell. He has been entrusted with the youth sector.

Piralkov will be assisted by veteran player/coach Matthew Pisani.
