Birkirkara midfielders Rowen Muscat and Ryan Scicluna are currently training with Spanish club CF Cadiz.
The duo left Malta for Spain on Tuesday after receiving the go-ahead from their club to link up with Cadiz who sent an official request to Birkirkara FC declaring their willingness to have a closer look at Scicluna and Muscat.
Sources have told Times of Malta that the contact between Birkirkara and Cadiz was made by a Maltese FIFA agent who has friends at the Spanish club.
Cadiz play in group four of the Segunda Division B, the third tier of Spanish football.
They invited Muscat and Scicluna to train with their first-team squad for five days after monitoring their progress throughout the season just ended. Both players have made a rich contribution to Birkirkara’s league triumph with Scicluna one of their most consistent performers in the first half of the season while Muscat came to prominence during the title run-in.
Muscat, who turns 22 on June 5, and the 19-year-old Scicluna are part of Malta’s senior and U-21 squads respectively. Both were granted permission by Malta coach Pietro Ghedin and Ray Farrugia, the U-21 mentor, to have a training stint with Cadiz.
Ghedin and Farrugia are stepping up their preparations for next month’s competitive assignments. Malta travel to Armenia for a 2014 World Cup qualifier on June 7 and, the day before, the U-21s face Poland in their opening 2013-15 Euro Group 7 qualifier.
