Veteran Żurrieq Wolves AC runner Alfred Debono returned to the long distance racing scene in recent months after overcoming some health concerns.
Debono, 64, clocked a respectable 1:45:11 in the Gozo Half Marathon last month, finishing second in the 60-64 years category.
It was Debono’s 38th successful half marathon race. Incidentally, that coincided with the 38th anniversary of the annual road running events being organised in Gozo.
Barely a week later, Debono travelled to the UK to run the Deep River Rock Belfast City Marathon. Of significance was the silent tribute paid by all runners to the victims of the Boston marathon bombing victims.
In unfavourable weather conditions and with over 17,000 registered runners in different distances on the day, Debono crossed the finish line in 3:52:36, placing eighth in the 60-64 years category. This was his 24th successful full marathon both locally and overseas.
“I’m very pleased to be back,” Debono said. “Running is my passion and after being forced to take a break from the sport, I’m just grateful to be able to take part in races.”
During his trip to Northern Ireland, he was assisted by Medcomms Ltd and Health Aid.
