The Church in Malta still has an active role to play in society, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said this morning.
He was speaking during a visit to Archbishop Paul Cremona and Auxiliary bishop Charles Scicluna at the Curia.
Dr Busuttil noted that although very much based on Catholic values, the PN was not a confessional party.
He said that the church in Malta had established a welfare state even before the government.
The Archbishop agreed that the church played an important role wherever there was suffering in Maltese society.
Asked for his opinion on the proposed reform to the Church-State agreement on marriage, Dr Busuttil said he agreed that the agreement needed to be reformed but noted that he did not know what the government’s proposals were.
Asked about same sex unions, Mgr Cremona said the family was central to the Church’s teachings. The church, he said, was against same sex unions but in front of God there was no sexuality as he loved everyone equally.
