The English Premier League comes to a close tomorrow with a full programme of matches.

The title has long been wrapped up by Manchester United and, this week, Wigan Athletic became the third team to be relegated to The Championship.

Tomorrow’s outcomes will determine the other team who will join Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in the Champions League next season with two London sides – Arsenal and Tottenham – still engaged in a tight contest for the fourth and final slot.

This has been a season to forget for Manchester City who conceded the title to neighbours United and failed to reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League for the second year running.

Last Saturday, they were shocked by Wigan in the FA Cup final and, as a consequence, manager Robert Mancini lost his job.

A consolation for City was their fine head-to-head record with the top five teams in the standings.

They topped the special classi-fication on better goals than Chelsea with United ending up in third place after claimingthe platonic honour last year.

Data shows that no side managed to stay undefeated in matches against the other direct contenders.

Tottenham were the top scorers but also the side that conceded most goals. Only one double was achieved, that by Chelsea on Arsenal. The Gunners lost five times and the most wins were obtained by City and Chelsea, four each.

The third place in the Premier League, which means direct entry to the group stages of the Cham-pions League, will most likely go to Chelsea, winners of the Europa League on Wednesday after beating Benfica 2-1 in the final.

Tottenham and Arsenal are chasing the fourth place.

Last Tuesday, Arsenal beat Wigan 4-1. They have a total of 70 points − one more than Spurs.

The Gunners’ last outing will be away at Newcastle while Tottenham are at home to Sunderland.

FA Cup winners Wigan have lost their fight against the drop, even if they earn three points at home to Aston Villa tomorrow.

It is the first time a top-flight side have been relegated after winning the FA Cup in the same season.

English clubs have three places in the Europa League next season – FA Cup winners Wigan, League Cup holders Swansea City and the fifth-placed team in the Premier League.

There will not be an extra berth for English clubs despite Chelsea’s triumph at the Amsterdam Arena as the Blues are guaranteed to qualify for Europe through their league placing.

According to manager Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool will not seek to play in Europe next season via the UEFA Fair Play League.

As things stand, the Reds have an outside chance of qualifying as UEFA offer a place to the top-ranking club in Europe’s top three leagues with the best fair play record.

England currently lies fourth behind Finland, Sweden and Norway.

The highest-placed teams above Liverpool in the Premier League’s fair play index – Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United – will all qualify for European competition next season thanks to their lofty positions in the standings.

However, it emerged that Liverpool’s season would start on July 18 if they enter the Europa League at the second qualifying round.

The second leg of that round would clash with the Reds’ lucrative pre-season tour of south-east Asia and Australia.
