Referee Esther Azzopardi is currently attending a seminar in Switzerland in preparation for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, to be played in Canada in 2015.
Azzopardi is one of 40 candidates who were welcomed in Zurich earlier this week by FIFA president Sepp Blatter and FIFA Head of Women’s Referees, Sonia Denoncourt.
Until 2015, the 40 referees from 33 different countries will be assessed medically, technically and physically before the final selection is made by the FIFA Refereeing Department and members of the Referees’ Committee.
The match officials will also be under scrutiny ahead of appointments for three major women’s football tournaments in 2014, namely the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Costa Rica, the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Canada and the Youth Olympic Football Tournament which will be played in China.
