There were strong rumours a couple of weeks ago that an extension in the validity period of (A)lien ID cards was imminent. Thus, they were to be extended to November 2013 due to the farce that is e-Residency.

Well, on May 8, I called at my bank, HSBC, to attend to some personal business and I needed to produce my ID card.

Surprise, surprise, it was rejected. It was indeed fortunate that I had my old residency certificate as otherwise I would not have been able to conduct and complete my business.

I think this matter needs some clarification from the DCEA/MHAS as to the current legality and validity of ID cards, especially as it is likely to take quite some time to process the 25,000 EU citizens in Malta and then 10,000 non-EU citizens too.

March 2013 clearly was not a suitable expiry date for ID cards and neither is June 2013 for residency certificates.

It is indeed laughable that the departments responsible think that November 2013 is as well...

What a joke!
